How Acebrel-M works

This is a combination, and each component handles a different part of the problem. Acebrophylline is a single molecule that does two jobs. One part relaxes airway smooth muscle in the way a xanthine bronchodilator does; the other is an ambroxol fragment that thins mucus and restores surfactant. So the airway is opened and the secretions blocking it are cleared at the same time. Montelukast blocks leukotriene receptors. Leukotrienes are inflammatory messengers released in allergy and asthma that tighten the airway and swell the lining, and they are not affected by antihistamines at all. Blocking them covers a part of the allergic response that an antihistamine alone leaves untouched. Combining them means one preparation covers what would otherwise need two or three.
