How Amerin-DX works

This is a combination, and each component handles a different part of the problem. Doxofylline relaxes airway smooth muscle in the same broad family as theophylline, but it lacks the adenosine-blocking activity that causes much of theophylline's palpitation and stomach upset. That is why it is generally better tolerated at doses that still open the airway. Ambroxol thins thick mucus by breaking the bonds that hold it together, so what was sticky and hard to shift becomes loose enough to cough up. Ambroxol also stimulates the surfactant that keeps the smaller airways from collapsing. Combining them means one preparation covers what would otherwise need two or three.
