How Fometol-200 works

This is a combination, and each component handles a different part of the problem. Budesonide is a corticosteroid delivered straight into the airway, where it damps down the underlying inflammation that makes asthma airways twitchy. Because it is inhaled rather than swallowed, the dose reaching the rest of the body is small. It controls the disease over time rather than relieving an attack. Formoterol stimulates beta-2 receptors on the smooth muscle wrapped around the airways. That muscle relaxes, the airway widens, and wheeze and breathlessness ease within minutes. Formoterol has that same rapid onset but holds the effect for around twelve hours, which is what makes it suitable for twice-daily maintenance. Combining them means one preparation covers what would otherwise need two or three.
