How Slush works
Sensitivity happens when the dentine underneath the enamel is exposed and the tiny tubules running through it carry hot and cold straight to the nerve. Potassium nitrate works on the nerve itself, with potassium ions gradually reducing how easily it fires. Sodium monofluorophosphate works on the tooth, hardening enamel into the more acid-resistant fluorapatite form. One calms the nerve, the other protects the surface.
