How Mefadol-D works

This is a combination, and each component handles a different part of the problem. Mefenamic acid inhibits cyclo-oxygenase and so cuts off the prostaglandins that drive period pain. That is not incidental: the cramping of dysmenorrhoea is caused by prostaglandins released from the shedding endometrium, so blocking their production addresses the actual cause rather than masking the pain. It reduces menstrual blood loss for the same reason. Dicyclomine relaxs the smooth muscle of the uterus and gut. Period pain and abdominal colic are produced by that muscle contracting too hard, so relaxing it works on the mechanism of the pain rather than only on the sensation.
