How Ractum-2.25 works

This is a combination, and each component has a distinct role. Piperacillin blocks the enzymes bacteria use to build their cell wall, so the wall weakens and the cell lyses. Paired with a beta-lactamase inhibitor, the spectrum widens considerably, covering organisms that would otherwise destroy the penicillin before it acts. Piperacillin has the broadest Gram-negative reach of the penicillins, including Pseudomonas, which is why the piperacillin-tazobactam pair is one of the most used empirical antibiotics in hospitals worldwide. Tazobactam has little antibacterial action of its own. Its job is to be attacked. Resistant bacteria defend themselves by producing beta-lactamase enzymes that break the antibiotic's beta-lactam ring; the inhibitor binds those enzymes and occupies them, so the antibiotic passes through intact. That is why the combination works where the antibiotic alone no longer does. Supplying them in one vial means the pair is reconstituted and given together, in the ratio intended.
