How Dicovel-SP works

This is a combination, and each component addresses a different part of the problem. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs block cyclo-oxygenase, the enzyme that converts arachidonic acid into prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are what sensitise nerve endings to pain and drive the swelling and redness of inflammation, so reducing them addresses the pain and the inflammation behind it rather than the sensation alone. Paracetamol raises the pain threshold centrally and acts on the hypothalamic centre that sets body temperature, which is what brings a fever down. It has little peripheral anti-inflammatory action, so it is combined with an anti-inflammatory rather than used in place of one. Proteolytic enzymes break down the protein debris and fibrin that collect at a site of injury or surgery. Clearing that material helps the tissue drain, which is what reduces swelling and lets the anti-inflammatory reach the site more effectively. Together in one tablet they cover more of what is actually causing the pain than any single agent would.
