How RT-Pro-60 works

Artesunate contains an endoperoxide bridge that iron inside the malaria parasite splits open, releasing free radicals that destroy the parasite's proteins and membranes. Because the reaction depends on the parasite's own iron-rich digestive vacuole, it happens inside the parasite and almost nowhere else. Parasite clearance is faster than with any other class. Artesunate is the WHO-recommended first-line treatment for severe malaria, having been shown to reduce mortality compared with quinine. It is water-soluble, so it can be given intravenously and acts within hours.
