How Alflaz-6 works

Deflazacort is a corticosteroid. It enters the cell, binds the glucocorticoid receptor and switches off the genes producing inflammatory mediators while switching on those that suppress them, so every arm of inflammation is damped at once. What distinguishes it from prednisolone is what it does less of: it has a smaller effect on calcium handling and on blood sugar, so bone loss and rises in glucose are less pronounced at equivalent anti-inflammatory strength. That is why it is often preferred where treatment has to continue for months -- in nephrotic syndrome, in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and in children, where a long steroid course competing with growing bone is a real concern. One point applies to every corticosteroid and is worth stating plainly: a course lasting more than a week or two is not stopped suddenly. The adrenal gland reduces its own cortisol production while the medicine is being taken, and it needs time to start again -- so the dose is stepped down under medical supervision. That is also why these strengths exist as a ladder.
