How Dicovel-SP works

This is a combination, and each component handles a different part of the problem. Diclofenac inhibits cyclo-oxygenase, the enzyme that produces prostaglandins. In an inflamed tooth or gum, prostaglandins are what sensitise the nerve endings and drive the swelling, so blocking them reduces the pain and the inflammation causing it rather than merely dulling the sensation. Paracetamol raises the pain threshold centrally and brings down fever by acting on the hypothalamus. Paired with an anti-inflammatory it adds pain relief through a separate route, so the combination controls dental pain better than either component at the same dose alone. Serratiopeptidase is a proteolytic enzyme. It breaks down the fibrin and protein debris that trap fluid in swollen tissue, so the swelling drains rather than sitting. In dentistry that matters most after an extraction or where a gum abscess has left the cheek puffy, because reducing the swelling itself relieves the pressure that causes pain. One preparation therefore covers what would otherwise need two or three.
