How Nualin-Alive works

This is a combination, and each component handles a different part of the problem. Cetirizine blocks the H1 histamine receptor. Histamine released from mast cells is what produces the sneezing, itching, watery eyes and runny nose of an allergic reaction, and this newer generation of antihistamine blocks it while barely entering the brain, so the drowsiness of the older agents is largely avoided. Phenylephrine narrows the swollen blood vessels in the lining of the nose. It is that swelling, not mucus alone, that blocks the nose during a cold, so shrinking the lining opens the airway and relieves the stuffiness and sinus pressure. Nimesulide inhibits cyclo-oxygenase, the enzyme that makes prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are what sensitise nerve endings to pain and drive swelling and fever, so blocking them addresses inflammation itself rather than only the sensation of pain. Caffeine is included as an adjuvant. It constricts the dilated blood vessels that contribute to headache, and improves the pain relief obtained from paracetamol and aspirin, which is why the combination is used for headache rather than either component alone. Combining them means one preparation covers what would otherwise need two or three.
