How Flovix-D works

This is a combination, and each component handles a different part of the problem. Ofloxacin blocks DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, the enzymes bacteria need to unwind and copy their DNA. Replication stops and the organism dies. Instilled directly into the eye, the drug reaches the cornea and conjunctiva at concentrations no tablet could produce there, while almost nothing enters the bloodstream. Dexamethasone binds the glucocorticoid receptor inside the cell and switches off the genes producing inflammatory mediators, so the redness and swelling of an inflamed eye settle. Paired with an antibiotic it lets the inflammation be controlled while the infection is treated -- but a steroid in the eye raises intraocular pressure in susceptible people, which is why courses are kept short and supervised. HPMC is included to hold the drops on the eye surface longer. One preparation therefore does what would otherwise take two.
