How Rifaxum-Plus works

This is a combination, and each component handles a different part of the problem. Rifaximin is an antibiotic that is barely absorbed from the gut, so almost all of it stays in the intestine where the problem is. It inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis there while leaving the rest of the body largely untouched, which is what allows it to be used in longer courses than a systemic antibiotic. Metronidazole is reduced inside anaerobic organisms and protozoa into reactive intermediates that break their DNA. Human cells and aerobic bacteria do not carry out that reduction, which is what keeps the action selective. Combining them means one preparation covers what would otherwise need two or three.
