How Acebrel-Plus works

This is a combination, and each component handles a different part of the problem. Acebrophylline is a single molecule that does two jobs. One part relaxes airway smooth muscle in the way a xanthine bronchodilator does; the other is an ambroxol fragment that thins mucus and restores surfactant. So the airway is opened and the secretions blocking it are cleared at the same time. Terbutaline stimulates beta-2 receptors on the smooth muscle wrapped around the airways. That muscle relaxes, the airway widens, and wheeze and breathlessness ease within minutes. Guaiphenesin increases the volume of fluid in the airway secretions, which lowers their thickness. Less viscous mucus moves more easily on the cilia lining the airway and needs less effort to clear. Combining them means one preparation covers what would otherwise need two or three.
