How Enfrio-Drop works

This is a combination, and each component handles a different part of the problem. Paracetamol resets the temperature centre in the hypothalamus back to normal and raises the pain threshold centrally. In a suspension the dose can be measured against a child's weight rather than forced into a tablet strength, which is the whole reason paediatric antipyretics are liquid. Phenylephrine narrows the swollen blood vessels in the nasal lining. It is that swelling, not mucus alone, that blocks a nose during a cold, so shrinking the lining opens the airway. Chlorpheniramine blocks the H1 histamine receptor. Histamine is what produces the sneezing, itching, watery eyes and runny nose of an allergic reaction, and blocking it at the receptor stops all four together. One preparation covers what would otherwise need two or three, which matters most where the patient is a child being persuaded to take it.
