How Nyriz-NS works

Hypertonic saline at 3 per cent draws water out of the airway lining and into the mucus sitting on it. Thick, sticky secretions become thinner and the cilia can move them along, so what could not be coughed up becomes clearable. It contains no drug at all -- the effect is entirely osmotic, which is why it is acceptable in infants. It is used in bronchiolitis and wherever secretions are too thick to clear. These are respules for a nebuliser. The machine turns the solution into a fine mist breathed in over several minutes through a mask or mouthpiece, so no coordination is needed at all -- which is why nebulisation is used for infants, for the elderly, and for anyone too breathless to manage an inhaler.
