How Amerin-DS works

This is a combination, and each component handles a different part of the problem. Terbutaline stimulates beta-2 receptors on the muscle wrapped around the airways. That muscle relaxes, the airway widens, and the wheeze eases within minutes. Combined with a mucolytic, the airway is opened and the mucus blocking it is thinned at the same time. Ambroxol breaks the bonds holding thick mucus together, so what was sticky and impossible to shift becomes loose enough to cough up. In a child that distinction matters: a small airway blocks far more easily than an adult's, and a chesty cough that cannot clear is what keeps a child awake. Ambroxol also stimulates the surfactant that keeps the smallest airways from collapsing, which matters more in a child's narrow airway than in an adult's. Guaiphenesin increases the water content of airway secretions, which lowers their thickness so the cilia lining the airway can move them along with less effort. One preparation covers what would otherwise need two or three, which matters most where the patient is a child being persuaded to take it.
